10 Popstars Share Their Struggle With Mental Illness

It is crucial to look after and nurture our physical as well as mental fitness. As we see the notion of physical illnesses being normalised and regularised, we can easily note the stigma that society attaches with mental illnesses and disorders. Also, the importance of mental health and fitness is still a developing concept in the minds of the people.

In order to contribute to the momentum of spreading awareness about the importance and normalisation of mental disorders, here’s a list of 10 Popstars who have opened up about their struggles with mental illnesses and have contributed their bit to its destigmatisation:

1. Selena Gomez:

We have often heard Selena Gomez advocating and attempting to detach the stigma associated with mental disorders and illnesses. During such campaigns, she also spoke about how mental illness challenged her personally in the recent past. She had been suffering from panic attacks, anxiety and depression, due to which she took a requisite break from her career in singing in order to make a strong comeback. “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support” – she said.

2. Britney Spears:

Britney Spears had recently opened up about her struggle with anxiety disorder and difficulty in handling social situations. Due to such mental conditions, she faced problems while partying, clubbing and attending social gatherings. However, she resorted to various lifestyle changes which helped her in pulling herself out from an adverse mental state. Currently, she is free from any mental disorders and is living a healthy and happy life with her children.

3. Demi Lovato:

It is splendid how Demi Lovato has expressed about her struggle with self-harm, eating disorders and bipolar disorder, for which she had previously taken help from rehab. She also made a documentary in 2014 called Demi Lovato: Stage Strong which depicted her struggle and recovery from such disorder. She has emphasised on the fact that one recovers from mental illnesses gradually but on a consistently ongoing basis.

Adele has opened up about the anxiety issues and on-stage panic attacks that she had been encountering in the near past. She has expressed how gaining inspiration from Beyoncé helped her fight this mental illness that she faced. Also, she hired a therapist who led her out of her struggle with anxiety and panicking.

5. Justin Bieber:

It must be surprising to note that a popstar as well-organised and comfortable in public, as Justin Bieber suffered from the mental illness called pressure of fame. He expressed his plight as to how he felt pressurised to fulfil public expectations at the cost of his own mental fitness. In order to take hold of this awful situation, he halted all his meet and greets for a particular period of time. This helped him in recovering his mental condition and make a noteworthy comeback.

6. Sia:

What we see on screen is the success and accomplishments that Sia has won, however it must be noted that she had been battling with depression, drug and alcohol addiction and suicidal tendencies back in 2010. But participating in a 12-step recovery programme led her out of this dreadful situation.

She was scuffling to such a bad extent that she couldn’t tell the day or the country she as present in. In order to recover from such extremity, she took a year off from work and returned with a bang. She specifically focused on how important it is for women to work upon their mental health.

We have often seen the openness and straightforwardness that Lady Gaga keeps as a pertinent element of her character. She has expresses about her immense struggle with depression and anxiety which started taking her career down. But before any such event could take place, she took strong hold of the situation and fought away her mental illness. She was also on medication for a certain period of time to treat this illness.

Zayn Malik has confessed about his anxiety issues and how such a mental illness made it terrible for him to perform live on stage. His anxiousness led him to face under-confidence while performing. However, this young popstar tackled this disorder and got rid of the anxiety disorder to become a better version of himself.

10. Kanye West:

All of us have seen the level of confidence Kanye West possesses while performing on stage. However, in 2010, he opened about how he contemplated suicide and how he faced an inclination towards putting an end to his own life. However, he recovered from such suicidal tendencies and gained all the encouragement and motivation to work harder and better without giving up on life ever again.
