Editor: Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you entered the music industry?

Vanit Bakshi: I am basically from Jalandhar (Punjab) India but since Dec 2008, I am living in Moscow and working here in a travel company as a tour manager. While I was in India at the time of Indian Idol 1, I started feeling that in future, I want to become a playback singer but due to family pressure of concentrating on studies or to find a good job, it seemed tough to fulfil my dream to be a singer. Anyhow to become a playback singer, I understood that I should learn classical music properly and work on my vocals, so I started learning music from Sh. Bawra (A classical music teacher in Jalandhar) whose father was a very well known musical teacher and reputed musician in town.

But before this, I had a hunger of performing on such big platforms like ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and ‘Indian Idol’ even after knowing that I don’t have proper knowledge of music. What I had was confidence in myself, so while I was pursuing my job in Jalandhar in a travel company “Sondhi Travels” which is one of the most reputed and oldest travel company in Punjab, I went for an audition of X Factor, Season 1.

I fortunately passed 3 rounds of their audition but at the time of 4th round, I wasn’t selected and cried a lot.

Anyhow, I returned back to my normal life and then I started learning classical music from Bawra sir, and I was already a good harmonium player and had given 1st year exam also of music. But then, after a few months, I got a job offer from Russia and due to family responsibilities, I could not say no to this offer and came to Russia but unfortunately I could not continue my music.

But in 2010 I left my job here in Moscow and returned back to India to my hometown  and then I started a musical band with my college friend, Amit Aggarwal and with a few more friends. We named our band – “Aagaz” and performed 1 or 2 Live performances in our town. And then again, my destiny took me to Moscow in the same company where I am still working. So, during these 9 years from 2010 till now, there were many ups and downs in my personal life and in my family.

During my early years here in Moscow, I started writing poetry/songs and then during these all years got a few chances to meet some big Bollywood celebrities and started writing/singing songs for them or poetry which they really appreciated. I started writing poetry when I got a chance to meet Living Legend Sh. Amitabh Bachchan Ji, I recited a poem for him and he liked it and appreciated, which gave me the motivation to write songs and poetry for other legends such as: Imitiaz Ali ji, Mohit Chauhan, Tabu Ji, Sonu Nigam Ji, Alka Yagniik Ji, Ayushmaan Khurrana Ji, Anoop Jalota ji, R.Madhavan ji, but I never knew that I will be a poet/lyricist too.

Thanks to my family and friends for supporting me and encouraging me to do better and also Mr. Ashwani Kumar Singh, who is a very well known Assistant Editor of Bollywood and Director of Shaan-E-Awadh International Film Festival. He was the 1st person who gave me a chance to write a song for his one project based on Shri. Ramchrit Manas and then he gave me opportunity to write theme song for his film festival Shaan-E-Awadh International Film Festival.

Also, talented musicians like Bawa Sahni and Gulzar Sahni gave me my 1st commercial break for Punjabi Music Industry. Also, I wrote many songs for them, most of them were: romantic sad and happy songs too but now I’ve started writing urban beat songs, club songs too and while writing for them I found that my writing turned into Bollywood style songs which is a good sign for me because of them I could launch my debut song as a singer too.

Moreover, I became lucky to meet other music genius – Suraj Kumar Gupta whose musical name is Supernova; with him I have done some songs as singer/lyricist and also another musical maestro – Udit Saxena who has same musical taste like I have. With him, I have done 2 songs as a singer/lyricist. There are some other special people who supported me all this while including my colleagues and brothers like Praveen Bhat who is a famous celebrity photographer, Aakash Sharma – a famous Youtuber (Indian Life In Russian Style), Mithilesh Backpacker – a famous Youtuber. They’re all brothers for life. I am thankful to all of them because without their immense support I couldn’t achieve my music goals.

Other than this, I have done some songs for social causes like : Adhoori Khwaahishein for child labor issue, Babul, Maa , Hamara Desh, Gussa Hai Bharat so I am looking forward to write and sing all kinds of songs.

Editor: Tell us about your achievements as a musician

Vanit: I haven’t achieved so much yet which I could describe here as achievements but my main achievements as an artist is the love I have received from people who appreciate my voice, lyrics and singing. Honestly, I am not a trained singer, I just love singing and try to bring good songs for my audience with meaningful lyrics.

My main strength is my lyrics and my writing ability which I feel is an achievement in itself. Rest, is the love of my audience and God’s blessings and most importantly, my mother’s blessings. “Koi shikwa naa, Koi Gila hai, Maa Kee Duaayon se sab Mila hai”.

Editor: Tell us about your songs which have been released until date. Is there a song you feel most proud of?

Vanit: As a singer my debut song was “Akhaan ch saawan” released by Shemaroo then “Hanju-Tears of happiness” released by Zee Music, other songs I released on my channel only like: Maa, Hamara Desh, Sajda, Gussa Hai Bharat and much more are on the way.

Like for a mother, all her babies are equally loveable, for me also my all songs are very special because I sing my own written songs.

If I still have to choose that one song I feel most proud of, it would be “Gussa Hai Bharat” song which was my tribute to our martyrs of Pulwama Attack. I think it’s the most touching song I released.

Editor: If you weren’t a singer/musician, what would you be doing right now?

Vanit: As I told you that I am also a tour manager in a big travel company in Moscow, so if I wasn’t a singer/lyricist then I would be doing my job or may be I would have followed another dream of mine to open an Indian cafe or restaurant in Moscow. I could also be a travel vlogger because I like doing that too.

Editor: Where did you get that confidence to perform on stage?

Vanit: First time, I performed in my hometown Jalandhar around 15 years ago in a singing competition organized by K.L.Sehgal Memorial Foundation so I luckily gained confidence long ago. Here in Moscow, I performed first time for Ayushmann Khurrana on stage of IFFR (Indian Film Festival Russia) , thanks to the director of film festival Mr.Sarfaraz Alam for such greay opportunity. After that I performed on some different Indian festivals in Moscow.

Editor: What is your dream project?

Vanit: My dream is to work with A.R. Rahman sir as a lyricist and want that one day my written song will be picturized for Super star Salman Khan. I want to work with Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam too but you know I want to see my musical team keep growing together with me to find their own way in bollywood because I believe that all of them have such great musical knowledge and talent which deserve a good place in Bollywood.

Editor: What would you like people to take away from your music?

Vanit: Positivity, love, social responsibility and humanity.

Editor: Which Artists Instagram Stories do you follow and why?

Vanit: A.R.Rahman, Salman Khan, Shasha Tirupati, Ayushmann Khurrana and many more. All are great inspiration for artists like me.

Editor: Any upcoming album or song release you want to share with us?

Vanit: My few songs are in pipeline : Akhaan jaa rwayiaan, Byaan, Nachde ne yaar and 2 songs for my 2 brothers youtube channels.

Editor: Who were your inspirations growing up?

Vanit: My Late Father was and will be always be my inspiration for his hard work and honesty, but if you ask in general, then Sachin Tendulkar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh ji, Amitabh Bachchan Ji, Salman Khan, they were and are my inspiration.

Editor: Is there any particular advice you would give to up-and-coming vocalists?

Vanit: Believe in yourself and be patient because nothing will happen overnight. Also, be humble and learn as much as you can.

Editor: What is your opinion about One Song? Do you think it’s a valuable platform for the career growth of musicians like you?

Vanit: One Song is a big platform for artists like me who don’t have any big support or sponsors to promote their talent. So, platform like One Song is a big need of today’s time for new talent so they can reach millions of people for what they deserve. It’s really a big platform for every artist and I recommend everyone to follow One Song on Facebook and Instagram. My best wishes to the whole team of One Song.
